Alvar Aalto was a master architect and furniture and lighting designer, born in Kuortane, Finland (1898-1976). His work also includes, textiles and glassware.
He designed buildings in different parts of the world: concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums, private homes and prefabricated houses. Aalto designed his first items of furniture before he had become a qualified architect. Alvar Aalto designed furniture using moulded laminated wood. As a modern furniture designer, he is linked with inventions of the bending of wood.
According to Alvar Aalto’s design principles, the interior design and furnishings had to be in harmony with the architectural style of the building. His lighting collection was inspired by shaping the nature and mood of interior spaces.
These photos of his furniture were taken during my visit to The Caixa Forum, Exhibition “Organic Architecture, Art and Design” in Madrid, Spain, October 2015.
